Prof. Nandor Gabor Than is a Hungarian physician-scientist with 30 years of experience in placental biology and pregnancy diagnostics. He earned his MD and PhD from the Medical University of Pécs, completed obstetrics training at Semmelweis University, and spent eight years at the U.S. National Institutes of Health’s Perinatology Research Branch, where he became Director of the Placenta Laboratory. After returning to Hungary, he established the Laboratory of Systems Biology in Reproduction and the Perinatal Biobank at the Research Centre for Natural Sciences and founded the biotech company Genesis Theranostix. He has also served as Research Professor of Obstetrics at Semmelweis University and held affiliations with Wayne State University and the University of Southern California. His major achievements include the discovery of over 90 genes encoding placental proteins across 15 species and a primate-specific placental galectin family that regulates maternal–fetal immune interactions. His research focuses on the molecular subclassification of pregnancy complications, integrating multi-omics and AI to identify disease mechanisms, therapeutic targets, biomarkers, and clinically applicable diagnostic tools. Prof. Than has authored over 190 peer-reviewed publications, including papers in American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology, PNAS, and Genome Research, with an H-index of 63 and over 12,000 citations. He has served as editorial board member or reviewer of over 70 scientific journals and 14 international grant panels, has held leadership roles in reproductive research organizations and personalized medicine initiatives, and is inventor on 20 granted or submitted diagnostic patents.
